Abstract
Objective To study the effect of xylose on gastrointestinal function in mice. Methods The Kunming mice were randomly divided into three treatment groups(low, middle and high doses) and control group. The mice in the treatment groups were orally administered xylose at the different doses(i.e.,2.8,4.2 and 8.4 g/kgf)or 14 days and those in the control group were given the same volume of water. The black semisolid nutrient paste was intragastrically given to all mice to determine the gastric residual rate and small intestinal propulsion. Results Compared with the control group, the gastric residual rates were lower and the small intestinal propulsion was higher in the treatment groups. Conclusion Xylose can distinctly promote gastric emptying and small intestinal propulsion,so it can improve the gastrointestinal function in mice.
