The Cause of Emily's Tragedy——A Rose for Emily:An Interpretation from a Feminist Perspective

Abstract

A Rose for Emily is the most famous short story written by the well-known American writer,William Faulkner.It tells us Emily's tragic life.This paper makes an analysis of the causes of her tragedy from a feminist perspective.There are three causes:first,the discrimination, oppress and domination over women by the male-dominated society and paternalism in American South;second,feminine morality of Puritanism and people's views on aristocracy,which deprive women of normal rights;third,lack of thoroughness in Emily's resistance.Due to these causes,Emily became so desperate that she eventually had to murder her lover in order to secure the female-subject position.
