Abstract
From Middle Ages to now,universities are the main form of higher education institutions,however higher education falls into different ideal types of cultivation eventually.Now there're mainly four types of higher education in the world,which are general education,professional education,academic education and vocational education.As the ideal types of education,no matter general education,professional education,academic education or vocational education is just a summary of one specific phenomenon in higher education.In reality,there're no pure ideal types of higher education.Served as an instrument to analyze problems rather than a normative concept,the way of differentiating ideal types of higher education is not only conducive to make clear the complexity of higher education but also can give pertinent suggestions to the reform of higher education.
