Abstract

Objective To investigate the expression of midkine(MK mRNA)and its significance in breast carcinoma. Methods The expression of MK mRNA was studied in situ hybridization in 56 patients of breast carcinoma tissue and their paired breast tissue. Results The positive rate of MK mRNA in the breast carcinoma tissue was 60.7%.The breast carcinoma tissues showed enhanced positive reaction cytoplasm to the MK mRNA and their paired breast tissues showed negative or weakly positive. The positive rate of MK mRNA was significantly lower in the cases of TNMⅠ,Ⅱstage and without lymph node metastasis than that of TNMⅢ,Ⅳstage and lymph node metastasis(P=0.045,P=0.027).The patients with positive MK mRNA expression had a significantly shorter survival than those with negative MK mRNA expression(P=0.039), whereas no correlations with age, menopausal status, tumor size, histologic grade(P0.05).Conclusion MK mRNA overexpresses in the breast cancer tissues. It might be considered to be a reference indicator for deter- mining the angiogenesis and invasion of breast carcinoma.
