Abstract
Objective To investigate the change of plasma visfatin and the relationship of plasma visfatin level with insulin sensitivity in patients with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods In this study, the patients were divided into four groups: 11 normal control subjects,10 obesity subjects,16 subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus and no obesity, and 9 subjects with type 2 diabetes melltius and obesity. The plasma visfatin was measured by adopting enzyme immunosorbent assay.Homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance(HOMA-IR) was calculated as a marker for insulin resistance. And we investigated the relationship of plasma visfatin concentrations to anthropometric and metabolic parameters in the subjects with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Results Plasma visfatin level did not differ between all above groups(P0.05).Plasma visfatin level was correlated positively with FPG(r=0.336,P=0.0226),but not with HOMA-IR.In a multiple linear regression analysis, waist circumference,waist-to-hip ratio and HDL-C were independently associated with plasma visfatin level(P=0.03,0.041,0.006).Conclusion There was no significant difference in light of the plasma visfatin level between the T2DM and obesity group as well as obesity group and lean controls. Our findings show that the plasma visfatin is linked with glucose and lipid metabolism but may be not related to insulin resistance.Plasma visfatin level is not a marker of clinical diagnosis of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
