Abstract
Objective:Interleukin IL-2 and IL-18 participate in tumor immunology.Methods:Peripheral blood samples were obtained from 30 healthy volunteers and from 45 patients with esophageal carcinoma.IL-2 and IL-18 levels were determined in each serum sample by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.Results: Mean serum IL-18 levels was significantly higher and the serum IL-2 levels was significantly lower in patients with esophageal carcinoma compared with healthy volunteers(P0.05).Mean IL-18 levels were increased in patients and mean IL-2 levels were decreased as the pathologic stage progressed.Increasing IL-18 levels and decreased IL-2 levels correlated with tumor growth and progression.Conclusions: Serum IL-2 and IL-18 levels might correlate with a certain depth of invasion and might be useful tumor markers in patients with esophageal carcinoma.
