Abstract

n-Amyl butyrate was synthesized from n-butyric acid and n-pentanol with p-toluene sulfonic acid as catalyst. The factors influencing the synthesis were investigated. The optimum conditions were found. The optimum conditions were as follows:n-butyric acid is 0.2 mol,the n(butyric acid):n(pentanol) is 1:1.4,the mass ratio of the catalyst used to the reactants is 2.5%,the volume of cyclohexane is 6mL and the reaction time is 2.5 hours.p-Toluene sulfonic acid is an excellent catalyst for synthesizing n-amyl butyrate and the product yield can reach over 83.3%.
