Abstract

Objective To compare the vision quality at the early stage between implantations of asperical and spherical intraocular lens.Methods Patients with bilateral senile cataracts were operated with phacoemulsification and IOL implantation.Visual acuity,best corrected visual acuity,refractions,IOL location,wavefront aberration measurements of 43 patients(86 eyes)after implantation of a spherical IOL(Alcon SN60AT) in 1 eye and an aspherical IOL(Alcon SN60WF)in the contralateral eye were analyzed 3 months postoperatively.The eyes were randomly assigned to the spherical IOL or the aspherical IOL according to the differences of IOL implantations.Results Uncorrected visual activity and best corrected visual activity were 0.65±0.12,0.69±0.09;0.89±0.07,0.95±0.12,respectively at 3 months postoperatively.The postoperative visual activity and refractions were not significantly different between the two groups(P0.05),and no complications occurred during or after surgeries;4th-order RMS in the aspherical IOL group was lower than that with the spherical IOL at 6 mm pupil diameter.For 3rd-and 5th-order RMS at 6 mm pupil diameter,no significant difference was found between two groups;Under mesopic conditions,18 eyes(42%)with an aspheric IOL had better vision.Conclusion Aspherical and spherical IOL could improve patients' visual acuity,however,aspherical IOL could improve the total high order aberrations,especially the spherical aberration,so that the visual quality could be improved.
