Abstract

The American anthropologist Palmer proposed a theory of cultural linguistics which has an innovative significance to the study of linguistics and culture. He enriched the three traditions of linguistic anthropology:Boasian linguistics, ethno semantics, and ethnography of speaking, combined them with cognitive linguistics and proved a better approach to explain linguistic phenomenon and problems—cultural lin- guistics. This paper offers an analysis on Palmer's motivation for integrating the three traditions of linguistic anthropology and cognitive linguis- tics and an interpretation on the linguistic anthropology complex, cognitive system and some key concepts of Palmer's cultural linguistics to have the readers get more implication from it.
