Abstract

Objective To compare the curative effects of holistic electroacupuncture, local electroacupuncture and traditional manual acupuncture on lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion. Methods Ninety-five patients with lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion were randomly allocated to electroacupuncture treatment, electroacupuncture control and manual acupuncture control groups. The curative effects and the pain scores were compared between the groups. Results The cure and marked efficacy rate was 81.3%,65.6% and 58.1%,respectively,in the groups. It was higher in the electroacupuncture treatment group than in the electroacupuncture control group (P 0.01).A comparison of the symptom and sign score differences showed that the effect was better in the electroacupuncture treatment group than in the control groups(P0.05,P0.01).Conclusion Electroacupuncture in more effective than traditional manual acupuncture in treating lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion, not only in stopping the pain but also in relieving the symptoms and signs.
