Abstract
In the late Qing dynasty,the social control system of Shanghai began to change from the traditional mode to a modern one,which was an important link for this city's modernization.The modernization of society control system refers to the process for the systemizing,the organizing,and the normalizing of the social control.In Shanghai,the process which began from the middle of 1890s had shown the obvious trend towards modernization at the beginning of the 20th century.However,it's far away from the real modernization.Anyway,the process laid the foundation for a further modernization during the period of the Republic of China.
