Abstract
AIM Cyclin E protein acts in late G 1 of cell cycle and accelerates the G 1 to S transition, cyclin E is associated with the human cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the significance of the cyclin E protein expression in gastric carcinoma. METHODS Cyclin E protein overexpression was studied in paraffin embedded sections of gastric carcinoma by means of a specific and sensitive immunohistochemical SP assay. RESULTS Cyclin E protein expression was present in 62% (37/?60) gastric carcinoma, which showed a significant difference from those of normal tissues adjacent to tumors (26%) ( P 0 05). Cyclin E expression was negatively correlated with histological differentiation. Gastric carcinoma with poor differentiation showed increased cyclin E expression, cyclin E was not related to the invasion of tumor, lymph node and distant metastasis. CONCLUSION Cyclin E is involved in the genesis of gastric carcinoma and not contributes to its development. Cyclin E protein is a potential diagnostic and prognostic marker for gastric cancer.
