Abstract

Politeness plays an important part in successful communication and cooperation is a principle that is observed by participants in talk exchanges. There is close relationship between being polite and being cooperative. Conversational implicature originates from Grice's Cooperative Principle and also contributes to the use of politeness. This paper aims to analyze the politeness principle from the perspective of conversational implicature, thus having a better understanding of the politeness theory.
