Clinical Experience of Treating Inguinal Hernia with Tension-Free Hernioplasty in Elderly Patients

Objective To discuss the efficiency of tension-free mesh plug hernioplasty on inguinal hernia in elderly patients.Methods The clinical data of 103 elderly patients with different kind of inguinal hernia were treated by tension-free mesh plug hernioplasty with Bard Mesh PerFix plug manufactured by Bard Company in USA.The operation time,postoperative pain,recovery of independence,complications and recurrence rates were observed.Results All of the patients were performed smoothly and there was no death.The operation time from 60 to 90 minutes,the average operation time was 46 minutes.The time to start out-of-bed exercises was 12-24 hours after the operation.3 cases were with scrotal edema,4 cases with urine retention,and no case with wound infection and hematoma.98 patients were followed up from 5-80 months;one case recurred;only 8 cases had regional chronic pain.Conclusion The tension-free mesh-plug hernioplasty had greater advantages then the traditional hernia repair procedure easier surgical operation,less postoperative pain,fewer complications and lower recurrence rates.It is the optimal surgical option for the management of elderly patients with inguinal hernia.
