Abstract

The effects of simulated acid rain of different pH values on seed germination and seedling growth in maize were studied. The results showed that different effects on seed germination and seedling growth of maize were caused by different pH values of simulated acid rain. When the pH values of simulated acid rain decreased from 5.6 to 2.5,the germination energy decreased from 93.23% to 53.24%;When the germination rate decreased from 95.45% to 57.12%,the germination index decreased from 29.74 to 13.46,and the vigor index decreased from 5.50 to 1.80;When NO2-content in leaves decreased from 210.13μg/(g.h)to 152.21μg/(g.h),the Chlorophyll a content, the Chlorophyll b content and the total Chlorophyll content decreased from 1.512,0.588 and 2.100 mg/g to 1.008,0.347 and 1.355 mg/g,respectively.There were yellow spots, crispation, discoloration and etiolation etc of maize leaves caused by the simulated acid rain of pH 2.5,and by which the growth and development were restrained seriously.
