Treament of vascular compression syndrome of the cranial nerves with microvascular decompression

Abstract

Objective To summarize the clinical outcomes of treating vascular compression syndrome of the cranial nerves with microvascular decompression(MVD). Methods Sixty-one patients with cranial never hyperactive dysfunctions underwent MVD,of whom 40 cases had trigeminal neuralgia,3 cases had glossopharyngeal neuralgia and 18 cases had hemifacial spasm.The patients were followed up for 5 to 22 months.The clinical data were retrospectively analyzed. ResultsThe effectiveness rates were 95% for trigeminal neuralgia,100% for glossopharyngeal neuralgia and 94.5% for hemifacial spasm,respectively.A mild adverse reaction occurred in 9(15.5%) patients,severe complication in 1(1.7%) patient after surgery.No one died from the operation. ConclusionThe microvascular decompression is definitely effective in treating vascular compression syndrome of the cranial nerves.
