Abstract

Objectives To study the effectiveness of microvascular decompression for the treatment of multiple cranial neuropathy. Methods Microvascular decompression was used to treat multiple cranial neuropathy cases, including trigeminal neuralgia with glossopharyngeal neuralgia (12 cases), trigeminal neuralgia with hemifacial spasm (3 cases), glossopharyngeal neuralgia with hemifacial spasm (2 cases), bilateral trigeminal neuralgia (3 cases), bilateral hemifacial spasm (2 cases) and bilateral glossopharyngeal neuralgia (1 case). Results The postoperative total effective rate was 100%, the postoperative curative rate was 97.83%(45/46). After the follow-up period (mean duration: 30.57 months), the curative rate was 97.83%(45/46). There was only 1 case of recurrent trigeminal neuralgia which was cured by second microvascular decompression. Conclusion Microvascular decompression is an effective and safe microsurgical method to treat multiple cranial neuropathy cases.
