A Hindlimb Ischemia Model in Rabbits

Abstract

Objective To establish an experimental animal model of limb ischemia. The ischemia was persistent and measurable. Methods Ischemia was induced by ligation of the distal iliac artery and excision of the common and superficial femoral arteries in the left hindlimb of 28 rabbits. The severity of the ischemia in each animal was evaluated regularly until postoperative 90 days. Results Angiography demonstrated minimal collaterals number ratio in the thigh was increased from 0.7±0.31 to 2.0±0.02 postoperatively. The calf blood pressure ratio was decreased significantly ( p 0.01). The calf blood flow ratio was decreased remarkably ( p 0.05). Histologic study of the hindlimb muscle showed atrophy, fibrosis and necrosis. Conclusion Persistent hindlimb ischemia model in the rabbit was made successfully.
