Expression of osteopontin and matrix metalloproteinase-9 in colorectal cancer and its clinical significance

Objective To investigate the expression of osteopontin(OPN)and matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9) in colorectal cancer and its clinical significance. Methods Immunohistochemistry PV-9000 method was used to determine the expression of OPN and MMP-9 in colorectal tissues from 30 patients with colorectal cancer,20 patients with adenomatous polyp and 20 normal volunteers.The relationships between expression of OPN,MMP-9 and clinical features in colorectal cancer were investigated.The correlation of their expression in colorectal cancer was analyzed. Results OPN expression and MMP-9 expression were higher in colon cancer tissues than those in adenomatous polyp and normal tissues(P0.05).OPN expression and MMP-9 expression were related to the invasion depth,the extent of differentiation and lymph node metastasis(P0.05),but not with gender,age and tumor diameter(P0.05).OPN expression was correlated with MMP-9 expression(r=0.562,P=0.001). Conclusion OPN and MMP-9 are closely related to the invasion and metastasis of colorectal cancer,and they may have the synergic effect in the occurrence and development of colorectal cancer.
