Refined Popularity——A Description of Art of Zhang Henshui's Novels

Abstract

Zhang Henshui is a wonder in the history of Chinese modern literature. Shortly after the vigorous “May 4th New Culture Movement”, he set off “Zhang Henshui Craze” by means of traditional Chinese novel with each chapter headed by a couplet to give a list of its content. The author tries to describe the art of “refined popularization” that appears in Zhang's novels while he was in his mental state between amusement and responsibility, and then to discuss the attractiveness of Zhang's novels which suits both refined and popular tastes.
