On ZHANG Xue-cheng's Idea of Novels

Abstract

ZHANG Xue-cheng's idea of novels originated from historical tradition from Ban Gu's HanShu, and moreover had some new changes. ZHANG Xue-cheng anew explained the historical value of novels, and put forward a viewpoint on three stages of novels, approving the rightful status of the legend of Tang Dynasty and the popular novels of Ming and Qing Dynasties. He originally explicated the literature value of novels, and brilliantly explicated the relationship between fiction and reality on writing novels. ZHANG Xue-cheng's idea of novels contained some new thought and some old one, illustrating that the historical traditional idea of novels has been split and is being replaced by the new one founding the literature value.
