Abstract

The relationship between Yuan Shikai and Reform Movement is mainly reflected in the following three aspects:First,it is reflected in Yuan Shikai's written presentation in 1894.Through a multianalysis of its content we find that Yuan Shikai,as a rising star of the westernization sect, his thought gradually slided to the side of reformers. In fact, his thought was between reform sect and westernization sect.Second,it is reflected in Yuan Shikai's written statement to Weng Tonghe. The proposals made by Yuan Shikai in his written statement were more practical than Kang Youwei's and was beneficial to reform.Third,it is reflected in Yuan Shikai's blowing the gab in 1898.Yuan Shikai's not becoming a reformer had something to do with his regarding Kang Youwei's plan was completely impractical.Generally speaking,Yuan Shikai's activities in Reform Movement should be analyzed concretely instead of being generally understood as speculative action.
