Pathological changes in liver, kidney and spleen in mice exposed to formaldehyde

Abstract

Objective To explore the pathological changes of formaldehyde(FA) inhalation exposure on liver, kidney and spleen in mice.Methods 80 KM mice were randomly divided into 4 groups. Mice were exposed to FA at the concentration of 0~30 mg/m3 in static chambers 2 hours daily for 14 days. The pathological changes in liver, kidney and spleen were determined through gross necropsy and microslides .Results Compared with the control, there were pathological changes in the livers of mice at high dose groups, including swelling of liver cells, degeneration, balloon-cell change, spot or focal necrosis, abundant nuclear polymorphism and inflammatory infiltration in portal area. The pathological changes of kidney were seen as renal glomerular and interstitium congestion, cutaneous dropsy and inflammatory cell infiltration, exutive cells and protein casts in tubules. The areas of white pulp and red pulp of spleen at high dose group were stagnated with blood. Multinucleated giant cells were infiltrated in the red pulp and granuloma pathological changes were observed in the red pulp.Conclusion When mice were exposed to FA at high concentration, pathological change in liver, kidney and spleen were observed in mice.
