Abstract
This paper studies Theme and thematic progression patterns in English poems based on Halliday 's notion of Theme and Danes' four types of thematic progression patterns,aiming to find out Theme and thematic progression patterns ' contribution to organizing the text and conveying the poem writer's intention.The findings of this paper show that different genres of poems have various characteristics of Themes and thematic progression patterns.The Themes and thematic progression patterns can demonstrate how the writer carries out the depiction or story-telling and the organization of the poem.The Themes can serve to strengthen the artistic and aesthetic effect of the poem.Various Themes and thematic progression patterns are adopted by the writer.So the writer can achieve the artistic and aesthetic effect,according to the specific needs and different genres of the poem.
