Abstract
Objective To research the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines interleukin 4 in the cerebrospinal fluid of patients with sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and to investigate the potential influence of anti-inflammatory cytokines on the process of (CJD).Methods The group was composed of patients with CJD,patients with other forms of dementia and control subjects. The expression of interleukin 4 in the cerebrospinal fluid of all patients was qualitated using western blot assay and the concentration of the anti-inflammatory cytokines interleukin 4 were determined using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results Interleukin 4 levels was significantly elevated in the cerebrospinal fluid of CJD patients. The elevation was significant to other dementia and controls(P0.05).Conclusions Increase of the anti-inflammatory cytokines interleukin 4 in cerebrospinal fluid of patients with CJD is a new finding. The data of the present study provide a clue toward the possible role of cytokines as immunological modifiers in the neurodegenerative process of CJD,and IL-4 might be a useful biomarker of CJD.
