Benazepril vs captopril in treating primary hypertension

AIM: To compare the efficacy and safety of benazepril with that of captopril in the treatment of patients with primary hypertension(PH). METHODS: Sixty patients with primary hypertension were randomly assigned into two groups. Benazepril group ( n =30) received benazepril 10 mg, po , qm(8 am) for 4 wk, and captopril group ( n =30) recerved captopril 12.5 mg, po , tid (8:00, 12:00, 20:00) for 4 wk; Each group 20 patients were evaluated by 24 h amblatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM). RESULTS: The total effective rates of benazepril group and captopril group were 90% and 87% respectively by casual blood pressure measurement ( P 0.05 ). Nighttime diastolic blood pressure of captopril group was not significantly lower by ABPM. Captopril group was significantly difference with benazepril group ( P 0.01). CONCLUSION: Benazepril in treating PH is effective and safe and in decreasing the nighttime blood pressure was superior to captopril.
