Analysis of Diagnostic and Etiological Factors in Patients with Fever of Unknown Origin

Objective To investigate the diagnostic and etiological factors in patients with fever of unknown origin(FUO).Methods The clinical data of 122 patients with FUO,who were treated in hospital since March 2005 to May 2007,were retrospectively analyzed.Results Among the 122 patients,106 patients were definitely diagnosed(86.9%).Among the 106 definite diagnosis patients,61 cases were infectious disease(42 cases were bacterial infection14 cases were virus infection,3 cases were fungus infection and 2 case belonged to other disease),45 cases were non-infections disease(18 cases were connective tissue disease,22 cases were malignant tumor and 5 cases belonged to other diseases).16 cases remained origin unknown until they were discharged from hospital.Conclusion Infection is the main cause of FUO;the incidence of tuberculosis was the highest among the various infectious diseases as the cause of FUO;patients with extrapulmonary tuberculosis presented more frequently with FUO than those with intra pulmonary tuberculosis.CVD and malignancy were also major causes of FUO,and the incidence of malignancy increased with the lapse of time.
