A Clinical Analysis of 116 Cases with Fever of Unknown Origin

Objective To explore the cause of fever of unknown origin(FUO).Methods The clinical data of 116 patients with FUO,who were treated in hospital since January 2002 to January 2012,were retrospectively analyzed.Results After a variety of examinations and specific treatment the definite diagnosis was finally made in 105 cases(90.5%).The most common causes of FUO were infectious diseases(47.5%),with tuberculosis accounting for 25.5% of cases of infection.Twenty-four cases suffered from collagen vascular disease(CVD),with 6 being Still,s disease accounting for 25% of the this category.19.9%(22/116) of the FUO were diagnosed as malignancy.16 cases remained origin unknown until they were discharged from hospital.Conclusion Infection was the main cause of FUO;the incidence of tuberculosis was the higher among the various infectious diseases as the cause of FUO;patients with extrapulmonary tuberculosis presented more frequently with FUO than those with intrapulmonary tuberculosis;CVD and malignancy were also major causes of FUO.Most FUO cases could be diagnosed through careful examination and analysis.
