A Revelation of Why Mr. ZHOU Ru-chang Reviled GAO E

Since 1950s,ZHOU Ru-chang has reviled GAO E,the author who wrote the sequel of A Dream of Red Mansions(Dream in short),and shortly afterthe Cultural RevolutionZHOU slandered GAO in his newly-written articleBehind the Complete Book of 'Dream',which runs beyond the,academic limit.What does ZHOU do that for?The author in the paper analyzes ZHOU' s aim:to clear the way to his own sequel of CAO Xueqin's novel——Xiangyun married Baoyuis HIS ending of the novel.By comparing ZHOU' view ofDreamwith that of GAO' s,it is easily concluded that GAO's view is close to CAO Xueqing's original thinking while ZHOU's is far from it in several aspects.Firsdy,in the understanding of love tragedy reflected in CAO's 'Dream',GAO had a better apprehension and successfully wrote the sequel of the story which ends with a tragedy while ZHOU made the story end with a comedy.Secondly,GAO constituted an achievement in writing out Baoyu's characteristic,i.e.the extremity of love into its opposition whereas ZHOU lapsed from that.It can be seen clearly from the above analysis that ZHOU's revilement and slander to GAO is serving for his purpose.
