Abstract
In this paper, the author argues different meanings of the character Du in the Jin dialect and some southern dialects in terms of the extended meanings .The Jin dialect, which is mainly heard in Shanxi province in northern China, is more likely to employ its metaphorical meaning while the southern dialects are developing Du in a notional and abstract senses, with the latter implying both time and space.
