Imaging and clinicopathological analysis of central neurocytoma

Abstract

Objective To study the imaging features and clinicopathological findings of central neurocytoma.Methods Imaging and pathologic findings in 5 cases with pathologically-proved central neurocytoma were retrospectively analyzed.Results All tumors were located at the septum pellucidum between the lateral ventricles and close to Monro's foramen,presenting as iso-intensity or slightly hyperintensity on CT,iso-signal or slightly hypointense signal on MR T1WI,and mixed hyper-signal on T2WI.The lesion showed a marked inhomogeneous enhancement on CT and MRI.Cystic degenerations within the tumor were seen in most cases.The tumors showed a sharp border.In the result of immunohistochemical study,all 5 cases were positive for synptophysin(Syn),2 cases were positive for glial fibrillary acid protein(GFAP),1 case was positive for S-100,and 3 cases were positive for Ki-67.Conclusion Central neurocytoma should be considered when a mass located at septum pellucidum is found in a young patient.CT and MRI are helpful for making a preoperative diagnosis and surgical plan.
