Modern Metrical Poems and the Chinese Translation of Foreign Poems

The translation of foreign poems has played a great role in forming and developing Chinese new poems. But neglecting the rules and forms of the source poems has led to the misunderstanding that all the foreign poems are free poems. Fortunately, since 1980s, some poem translators have paid attention to restoring the rules and forms of the source poems in their translation, which is called by Mr. Bian Zhilin the adulthood of poem translation. The combination of displaying the rules and forms of foreign poems with the theory research and creation of modern Chinese metrical poems is helpful in establishing modern Chinese metrical poems and accelerating the healthy development of Chinese poems.
