ANALYSIS OF DRUG ABUSE IN WULUMUQI

Objective:To understand the characteristics of drug abuse in Xinjiang district and provide advice on drug control to the government. Method: An investigation was carried out on the social demographic characteristics and the factors causing drug abuse among 1281 drug abusers who took compulsory detoxification in Wulumuqi Compulsory Drug Detoxification Institute in 1998. Result: All of the 1281 cases were opioid abusers; among them, 25.21% abused marijuana, 21.70% abused triazolam and 11.79% abused diazepam at the same time; male abusers took 86.26%; 77.52% were under the age of 30; for female abusers, 85.58% were under 30 years old; 78.20% only passed middle school education or below ; 69.74% had no job, or self-employed or did farm work; 73.22% lived in self-employed, jobless, single parent, remarried families or orphan. The main reason of their drug abuse was curiosity and contrary psychology. Conclusion: Male, under 30 years old, no proper job, with low educational level, poor psychological diathesis, unhealthy family and social surroundings are susceptible group of drug abuse. We suggest that drug control work of our country should focus on drug prevention in the risk group.
