On Urban Bio-diversity and Landscape Plants Planning in China

Based upon the analysis of current status of green space system planning and the selection of landscape plants in urban area of China, some ideas and opinions were proposed: the main problems in landscape plants selection and application were species diversity is low and indigenous characteristics of local city is not obvious, while the foreign plants were not characterized carefully before their using in urban plantation and little attention were paid to the alien species invasion problem. A nation-wide investigation and exploration of indigenous landscape plants should be planned and implemented, and special attention should be given to species diversification and genetic diversity collection of important plant species; indigenous plants (including trees and herbaceous plants) should play major role in landscaping of urban areas so as to strengthen the local features of the cities, and more careful studies should be carried out for introduced plant species so as to prevent from the dispersing of invasive plants out of control.
