Abstract

Objective To investigate AIDS-related knowledge and its influencing factors among the residents of municipalities, and to provide the clues and reference for further developing comprehensive propaganda and formulating publicity policies. Methods A multistage stratified cluster random sampling method was applied to select respondents.A total of 8,654 residents were investigated. Results The awareness rate of AIDS transmission routes of the surveyed residents was 69.0%(68.0%~70.0%).The awareness rate of AIDS-related knowledge among all the residents was 2.7%(2.4%~3.1%).The awareness rate of AIDS transmission routes of the surveyed residents was statistically correlated with their educational backgrounds, occupation, and family income per month. The awareness rate of AIDS transmission routes of the surveyed residents whose household income was more than 1,000 per month was 1.21 times that of the surveyed residents whose household income was less than 1,000 per month(OR=1.78,95% CI 1.04~1.41).The awareness rate of AIDS transmission routes of the surveyed residents who had higher educational background was 1.66~4.82 times averagely compared with the illiterate residents. The awareness rate of AIDS transmission routes of the surveyed residents with other occupations was 0.61~0.79 times averagely compared with the surveyed peasants. Conclusions The results suggest that the awareness rate of AIDS transmission routes of the surveyed residents is lower than the requirements of China Plan of Action for Containment and Control of HIV/AIDS(2006-2010),but the residents in municipalities could acquire AIDS-related knowledge by diverse sources and with less restrictive means. The impacts of occupation, family income per month and educational background on awareness of AIDS-related knowledge indicate that it is necessary to enhance AIDS-related knowledge in vocational education, especially in the population with low-income and lower educational background.
