The Clinical Evaluation of Ultrasonic Subgingival Scaling and Hand Instrumentation

Objective:To compare the clinical effect of ultrasonic subgingival scaling with hand instrumentation on chronic periodontitis.Methods: Thirty-two patients with chronic periodontitis were enrolled in this clinical study and were divided into two groups randomly.The patients in the study group received ultrasonic subgingival scal ing,whereas the patients in the control group received hand instrumentation.Periodontal indexes including plaque index,gingival bleeding index,probing pocket depth,and clinical attachment level were evaluated at basel ine,l and 3 months.Results: After periodontal treatment,plaque index,gingival bleeding index,probing pocket depth,and cl inicalv attachment level of both groups in 1 month and 3 months decreased significantly compared with baseline(P0.05).There was no significant difference of those periodontal indexes between the two groups in 1 month and 3 months(P0.05).Conclusions: Ultrasonic subgingival scaling is effective on the treatment of chronic periodontitis as well as hand instrumentation.
