Abstract
AIM: To observe the effects of subgingival ultrasonic scaling on the aged with severe chronic periodontitis in their supportive periodontal therapy.METHODS: After basic treatment,60 severe chronic periodontitis patients, whose periodontal pockets were deeper than 5mm and the indexes of bleeding after probing were positive, were randomly assigned to receive subgingival ultrasonic scaling because of their refusing of routine periodontal flap surgery.Subgingival ultrasonic scaling was carried out every 3 months.Clinical assessments for pretreatment(base line) and posttreatment(6 and 12 months) included plaque index(PLI),bleeding index(BI),bleeding on probing(BOP) and probing depth(PD).A t-test was used to determine differences in assessment values.RESULTS: When the results were compared with the base line, all clinical periodontal indexes improved significantly(P0.05);but there was no obvious difference(P0.05) between the indexes at the 6 month and 12 month.CONCLUSION: Acceptable curative effect can be achieved by the regular application of ultrasonic treatment to the aged with severe chronic periodontitis.
