Effect of metformin combined with Diane-35 on the pregnancy rate of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome following ovulation induction

Objective To observe and analyze the effect of metformin combined with diane-35 on the pregnancy rate of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS)following ovulation induction.methods Sixty-three patients with PCOS,who received treatment in our hospital from January,2004 to October,2006,were chosen as subjects and divided into the treatment group(group A) and the observation group(group B).Group A,consisting of 32 patients,were administered with metformin and diane-35 orally.After 3 months of treatment and on the 5th day of the menstrual cycle,the therapy of CC and HMG was initiated.Following administration of metformin and diane-35,luteinizing hormone(LH),follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH),luteinizing hormone(LH)/FSH,testosterone(T) and insulin(INS) were measured on the 3rd day of the menstrual cycle.Group B,consisting of 31 patients,was given the therapy of CC and HMG on the 5th day of the menstrual cycle or withdrawal bleeding.The ovulation rate,pregnancy rate and abortion rate were compared between the 2 groups. results: After 3 months of treatment with metformin and diane-35,levels of LH,FSH,LH/FSH,T and INS for the patients of group A decreased significantly,when compared with those before treatment(P0.05).Moreover,ovulation rate and pregnancy rate increased and abortion rate decreased,when compared with those of group B. conclusion For ovulation induction in the treatment of infertility induced by PCOS,the therapy of CC and HMG combined with metformin and Diane-35 before ovulation induction could effectively decrease testosterone,improve insulin resistance,increase pregnancy rate and decrease abortion rate.
