On the Theories of Cognitive Metaphor and Their Significance and Application in English Vocabulary Teaching

Abstract

The theories of cognitive metaphor hold that metaphor is cognitive in essence and it is planted deeply in human language,thinking and culture.Application of the theories of metaphor in English language teaching is a must for the development of metaphor research and also a necessity to the English language teaching.From the aspects of the understanding of basic category words,the extension of word sense,and the words' cultural connotation,this paper aims to interpret in detail the concrete application of theories of cognitive metaphor in the vocabulary teaching so as to show its practical significance in English language teaching.
