Transmitting Artistic Conception in Translating Ancient Chinese Poems into English

Abstract

The question faced by every translator of ancient Chinese poems is,to what state and goal the translation endeavors? Upon an analysis and comparison of the four English versions of A Tranquil Night by LI Bai of the Tang Dynasty,this article raises and discusses the issue of transmitting artistic conception in translating ancient Chinese poems into English.In the author's view,transmission of artistic conception should be treated as the primary standard in translating ancient Chinese poems.
