TRAFFIC ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES IN INDIAN CITIES

The maximization of the use of the existing street system and to improve road safety without impairing environmental quality is the principal aim of traffic management. In the recent past considerable developments have taken place in the field of traffic engineering and management and some of the techniques deserve wide application in our environment. This state-of-the-art paper deals with such developments as one-way regulation, signalization, and traffic control improvement to road intersections, pedestrian facilities, parking and terminal facilities, mass transportation system, network improvements, other engineering measures and their enforcement, traffic education and citizen participation. It is pointed out that the formation of a high level committee involving all departments connected with the implementation of traffic management schemes would be essential. (TRRL)
