Synthesis, Characterization, and Performance Evaluation of Some Multifunctional Lube Oil Additives

Abstract

Eight polymers (two homopolymers and six copolymers with 1-decene) of isodecyl acrylate and isooctyl acrylate were synthesized using benzoyl peroxide as initiator and characterized by spectral analysis, viscometric, and thermogravimetric measurements. Intrinsic viscosity obtained from the viscometric method was used to determine the viscometric molecular weight of the polymers. Pour point (PP) and viscosity index (VI) of the additive-doped base oils were evaluated to check the efficiency of the polymers as pour point depressant (PPD) and viscosity index improver (VII), respectively. Analysis of different properties indicates that the isooctyl acrylate polymers have better lube oil additive property than that of isodecyl acrylate polymers. VI and PP values of the polymers doped in base oils depend on the nature of mineral base oils, polymer type, and also on the concentration of the additives.
