Acrylate Terpolymers as Potential Pour Point Depressant and Viscosity Modifiers for Lube Oil

Abstract

Four terpolymers were synthesized by using different ratios (w/w) of three monomers (octyl acrylate, decyl acrylate, and dodecyl acrylate). The structures of the prepared terpolymers were confirmed using FTIR, NMR, and GPC data. Additive performances of each of the prepared terpolymers as viscosity index improvers and pour point depressants were evaluated by standard ASTM methods. A close study indicated that terpolymer prepared by using a higher ratio of dodecyl acrylate acts as a better pour point depressant and also as a better viscosity index improver.
