Abstract

Fractionation of humic and non-humic matter of six soil profiles from Mewar (Rajasthan) has been reported. Analysis of humic acid, fulvic acid, hymatomelanic acid, β-humus, humin, lipids, free sugar and polysaccharide fractions has provided information on the nature of organic matter of the soils and their variations in different layers of the profiles. Distribution of organic carbon in various fractions and its variation with depth have also been recorded. It is concluded that exact characterization of organic matter can not be done by determination of carbon content alone.
