Abstract
Humic and fulvic acids were extracted from soils from different agro-climatic zones of India. Humic acids contained higher carbon but less oxygen than the corresponding fulvic acids. Higher O/H and lower C/H ratios were observed in fulvic acids as compared to humic acids. Also, fulvic acid was more acidic. Elemental and functional group analyses enabled in deriving the molecular formulae of humic and fulvic acids and brought out the wide variations in the composition of these organic matter fractions when compared from different sources.
