Abstract
There are three major potential advantages obtained when the supplementing coal with solid-waste fuels; they are: reduce solid-waste disposal problems; reduce total plant SO/sub 2/ emissions; lower total fuel cost. While there are many possible waste fuel-cost combinations that achieved the desired results, several combinations produced higher SO/sub 2/ emissions or higher total fuel costs. Each boiler installation has unique site requirements. In most instances, a detailed study must be performed by an architect/engineer and/or boiler manufacturer to determine the feasibility of adding the waste fuel to an existing or new boiler. Many existing boilers may not be designed suitably for the additional waste fuel requirements. Becoming familiar with the fundamentals of combustion for waste fuel firing, in addition to the normal auxiliary requirements, will ensure that the maximum number of practical waste fuel-coal combinations are identified and implemented. 3 references, 17 figures, 6 tables.
