Effect of Different Doses of Nitrogen and Phosphorus on Growth, Flowering, Seed Yield and Quality of T1Nda

Abstract

The present experiment on the effect of nitrogen and phosphorus on seed production of tinda was conducted during 1978 at Vegetable Research Farm of Haryana Agricultural University, Hissar-Haryana. There were four levels of nitrogen (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg/ha) and four levels of phosphorus (0.25, 50 and 75 kg/ha) which were replicated in a Randomised Block Design in three replications. The increasing doses of nitrogen had a significant increasing effect on various growth characters. Sex ratio was norrowed, fruit maturity was delayed with increasing doses of nitrogen. Number of female flowers per plant, diameter and weight of ripe fruit were increased significantly with each increase in nitrogen and phosphorus doses. Highest dose of nitrogen (120 kg N/ha) with highest doses of phosphorus (75 kg/ha P2O5) showed significantly better effect on various flowering and fruiting characters in comparison to rest of the treatments. Seed yield and its quality (1000 seed weight and Volume of 1000 seeds) was also significantly superior when nitrogen was applied at the rate of 80 kg/ha and phosphorus at the rate of 75 kg/ha.
