Abstract
This article describes the STORM (Stuttgart Transport Operation by Regional Management) initiative at Stuttgart, Germany. It is a leading European public-private sector partnership for the development and deployment of advanced transport telematics, and is one of the most comprehensive urban projects in the world. It integrates Stuttgart's existing traffic control systems through a central computer, and coordinates the exchange and dissemination of the necessary information. The control systems being integrated are: (1) Wuerttemberg State's traffic control centre near Stuttgart; (2) the public transport operating centre for Stuttgart's light rail network and buses; (3) central Stuttgart's parking guidance system; (4) the central traffic control centre for most of Stuttgart's traffic signals; and (5) the traffic control and information systems for German railways and Stuttgart airport. The article describes STORM's facilities for: (1) travel information provision; (2) its individual route guidance system; (3) parking and public transport information provision; (4) display of current departure times for train services; (5) its commercial vehicle fleet management system; and (6) its emergency call system for rapid response to accidents.
