Abstract

The present work reports the morphological and genetic variability in a collection of 46 varieties of green gram (Phaseolus aureus) grown under rainfed conditions. There was a wide range of phenotypic variation in almost all the characters excepting branches per plant, pod length and seeds per pod. A study of genetic parameters such as genotypic coefficient of variation, heritability, and genetic advance revealed that there was a large amount of genetic variability available in the material and that much of it was heritable. Characters like plant height, clusters per plant, pods per plant and 100 seed weight showed high heritability values accompanied by high genetic gain.
