Effectiveness of Expressive Therapy in Reducing Psychological Disorders, Improving Self-Esteem, and Social Support among Addicts

Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of an expressive therapy program in reducing psychological disorders, improving selff-esteem, and social support among drug addicts The porposed sample of the study included (20) addicts, aged from 19-30 years, who were exposed to adiction staf were taken from Rehabilitation Center of Staf Abus center. The sample was divided randomly into two groups, experimental group included 10 addicts and the control group included 10 addicts.. For that purpose the research develped the psychological disorders list, self-esteem, and social support scales, the vaditiy and reliablity were conducted. A group counseling program was developed based on expressive therapy; consisting of nine sessions. Every counseling session around 120 minutes. a pre-test; the psychological disorders, self-esteem, social support scales on the two groups were applied.The experimental group was exposed to the counseling program, the control group did not receive any training. At the end of the program, the post-test was applied on the two groups. After two weeks from ending the program, retention were estimated on the psychological disorders, self-esteem, social support scales,were applied. The ANCOVA results indicated statistically significant differences at 0.05>α between the two groups, on the post test, in the the psychological disorders, self-esteem, and social support, compared to the control group. And ANCOVA results in retention indicated that no statistically significant differences in self esteem and social support, but indicated statistically significant differences at 0.05>α the psychological disorders between the two tests.The experimental group showed improvement in the the psychological disorders. The study concluded a positive effect to the counseling program, which was developed for improving the psychological disorders, self-esteem, social support of drug addicts, and recomended to use the counseling program of this study by all concerned sectors of the society that deal with the addicts and in the further studies.
